Our
market evolved from the home produce markets of the Womens' Institute founded
after the First World War.
In 1932 the markets were registered as W.I. Markets Ltd and were administered by the National Federation of Womens' Insitutes until 1995, when they became a self-governing co-operative.
Alton W.I. Market was founded in November 1962.
In July 2004 the national organisation was re-registered as Country Markets Ltd.
The Alton Market was affiliated to the Hampshire Country Market Society which was administered by Country Markets Ltd. from its head office in Chesterfield.
In June 2007 Alton took the decision to become an independent market, following several other markets in Hampshire including Stockbridge and Whitchurch.
We will be known in future as ALTON FRIDAY MARKET Ltd
